City Guide Dubai 2010 - All The Secrets
City Guide Dubai 2010!!! STOP STOP STOP!!! Wait a minute!!!
* Dubai Crime
There is very little crime in the UAE because everyone is here on a visa and there isn't so much of a poor underclass. Crime does
happen occasionally, of course, and it's always a genuine surprise. If you do commit a crime in the UAE, expect to be deported and
never come back.
If you are arrested, or have to talk to a police officer, be polite, cordial and cooperative at all times. Do not swear, because this is in
itself a crime and will not help your situation. There are consuls and embassies from all around the world that are available, and
you should make sure you request to speak to your embassy at the earliest opportunity. Your embassy or consulate cannot get you out, and do not expect to be treated leniently if you have committed a crime here. If you have hurt somebody, the blood
money you have to pay can be a huge amount - up to 200,000 dirhams. Remember, drugs offences carry a mandatory term of at
least 4 years. Dubai also has the death penalty but in practice this is little used.
* Electricity
Dubai's plugs and sockets are the same as the UK, at 240 ac 50htz, with the standard UK 3-pin plug socket. If you have anything
purchased in the US, Japan, Korea or anywhere else with a 100v power system, you will have to get a voltage adaptor at
Carrefour.
It's generally massively easier to purchase things here instead of blowing up your 100v equipment.
* Tax
There is currently no Income Tax due on revenues earned within the UAE. This could, however, change soon. There is likewise
an intent to replace the 5% Customs Import Duties currently charged with a VAT of a similar amount. This also could start very
shortly but isnt currently occurring.
Whilst there are no direct taxations, there are many ways by which the Government charges, including vehicle registration, road
tax, receipt tax, toll-tax, alcohol tax, cigarette tax and not least, the cost of actually doing business by paying Trade License Fees, Air travel Tax and Airport Landing Tax and Fuel Surcharge Tax, plus many other ancillary deductions that do cost you money.
These costs, especially rental costs, can have a serious effect on your business.
