City Origins

The origin of cities is a great way to gain an insight into the raw mentality of an area

. Take these two cities for example.

Today, the cheap Birmingham hotel would not make you think that the city was once remote and marginal. In the Roman period, populations and wealth lay in the Avon and Trent valleys, leaving Birmingham to simply be a dense forest. There is proof that some settlements did indeed form here but they were only seasonal as many came to stay the night whilst hunting in the woods. The first time, the area became the attraction of people was the Bronze Age between 1700 and 1000 BC. Some suggest that all the burnt mounds that can be seen around Birmingham today hints to the fact that many surrounding settlements were torched and many were forced to relocate to Birmingham hence population levels began to rise. The forested area began to have its advantages as it was able to be a defence against Roman armies,

Nearby Derby also has its Roman origins. Initially, there had been a Roman group of Derventio at the Chester Green area, which was later known as the five fortified towns of the Danelaw. The first time the name was officially written was by the Anglo-Saxons as Djra-b, to mean the village of the deer. Whilst some stick to this theory, others argue that Derby simply came about as a derivation of the original Derventio, or it could be linked to the river Derwent which passes through. There is no proof for either hypothesis.

However what is a given fact is that the Vikings and Anglo-Saxons actually lived together in the area, each having a share of the land which was surrounded by water resources. With Derby being split into two by the river, the two areas of northern and Deoraby were shared for peaceful co-existing. There are many cheap hotels in Derby to book into if you want to learn more about this areas fascinating history.

As both cities show, there is more than meets the eye to the origins of a city, forming current day mentality.
