City Versus Country; Where Is Your Preferred Holiday Getaway?

Ahh, the age old dilemma, a holiday in the city or the country

? Well, perhaps not really a dilemma, but rather a pleasant decision to have to make. Still, sounds rather more dramatic than the latter.

Some people prefer to get away from it all, travel through country lanes and nestle down in a cosy cottage for a while, and others opt for an action packed city break, with nights out and days exploring the concrete junglebut which is better? Is one superior to the other? Perhaps your ideal holiday itinerary is a mix of the two.

It really depends on what youre looking to get out of your holiday. A holiday in the country can be just what you need to remove yourself from your usual routine, and get out of the hustle and bustle of working and general life. And whilst you might be thinking a rural retreat doesnt offer a lot of variety, you couldnt be more wrong. First, there are different types of country holidays. You could stay in that cosy remote cottage, surrounded by hills or fields; alternatively you could go for a modern seaside apartment near to the beach and the local pub. Whether you choose cottage, country house or apartment, theres lots to do. And, typically, when in the country- particularly in the UK- you are probably not too far from a historical site, house or place of natural beauty. The National Trust and English Heritage have sites all around the country, ready and waiting to be explored. If this is not your thing, there are family farms, zoos and adventure parks in various locations, making a perfect family holiday activity. And whether youre relaxing, seeing some sites or visiting attractions, there is usually a nice pub or local restaurant. On the other hand, perhaps the thought of a country holiday just isnt your cup of tea. Maybe your idea of getting away from it all is seeing a new city and exploring a new culture. And a city break is bursting with opportunities. Arguably, it is unsatisfactory to put all cities into one box; every individual one seems to have something different to offer, and has a different feel. Discovering the streets of New York is a completely different experience from seeing the sights of Paris, for example. New York is bustling and grand, and there is almost a cinematic feeling to it; probably owing to the amount of films set there. Paris, on the other hand is romantic and in a way more laid back, but still a hub of culture. And there are so many great cities to visit, from Rome and Venice to London, Sydney and San Francisco. Visit museums and galleries, go to the theatre, explore shops, markets, restaurants and city landmarksthe list of activities is endless. And imagine waking up in a cool city apartment, hearing the sounds of urban life and starting the day with an optimism for all that a great city has to offer

Personally, I really do prefer a combination of the two. Fresh air, a warm inviting pub and beautiful scenery always draw me to the country, but at the same time there is an excitement and an other-worldliness to gain from exploring a new city.
