Most of us are familiar with our company's code of conduct, workplace harassment or information technology policies. It is interesting to read code of conduct policies that make no mention of civility in the workplace. In fact, civility is a term that is rarely part of a company's vocabulary, yet it affects employees on a daily basis. Employees feel so stressed and overworked nowadays, that most of us can admit to either have sent or received a rude email or comment to or from another coworker. These negative interactions can be hurtful and can affect people's focus and productivity at work.

Why do we need civility in the workplace? You may have excellent skills in your area of expertise and you may be a high performer, but your your ability to work and get along with others has a definite impact on your success. It can affect whether you are promoted, or assigned to work on a particular project or team. If your boss knows that you are not very tactful in your interactions, he/she may be reluctant to put you in charge of that important account! Also, we spend a lot of time at work. Wouldn't we all benefit from a positive and respectful work environment?

OK, so what is civility? In its simplest form, it's treating everyone with consideration and respect, and truly valuing them as human beings. Treat everyone with civility, regardless of gender, sexual orientation, conflicting values etc. Civility builds character and creates a positive work environment, where everyone feels valued.

Here are some tips which will help you build a positive work reputation and environment:

Don't ignore people. Make eye contact with other coworkers, even if you don't work with them directly.

Greet people that you encounter with a friendly "Good morning", "Hi", "How are you?".

Smile. Always have a positive and friendly attitude and demeanor.

Help people when they need it, especially when someone is new.

Don't ever yell at someone at work. Even if you are upset, speak softly and remain composed.

Don't ignore people. When someone talks to you, always provide them with a response.

Always say "Please", "Thank you" or "Excuse me".

Give and receive sincere compliments. If someone has done a great job on a project, make sure to compliment them!

These tips are very simple and are meant to be a reminder of how easy it is to be civil and respectful. Thank you for reading!
