Burberry was founded in the 1856 by Thomas Burberry, a 21-year-old former draper's apprentice. He opened a store in Basingstroke, Hampshire, England, and focused on selling outdoor attire.

Burberry was inspired by the loose frocks that were worn by British country fold, and sought out to design lighter and more comfortable rain gear. He developed a tightly woven fabric made of water-repellent linen, which he called gabardine. This new fabric, patented in 1888, was sturdy and tear-resistant, yet also lightweight.

In 1914, Burberry was the supplier to make officer's coats that could withstand the conditions of contemporary warfare. The resulting coats became known as "trench coats," due to their durability during trench warfare.

Since then, the company has become famous for its trench coats and for the iconic Burberry check pattern that appears on much of the merchandise.
