Classic Hip Hop Downloads In A Shoebox
I recently went home to visit my parents, and while there
, I slept in my old bed and room. It brought back a constant flood of memories from when I was young. I thought back to my teenage years, and all of the friends who I'd lost touch with over the years. While reminiscing over the past, I stumbled on a shoebox full of old tapes that were filled with original and live mixes of some great old songs. I couldn't believe it! These days, you'd be lucky to stumble across few of these great songs, unless you had some awesome resource for classic hip hop downloads.
I had some real classics on my hands. Some recordings that I had completely forgotten about from some of the best artists, and I had several live, homemade tape recordings of some of the earliest memories I have of hip hop. It was thrilling to be able to kick back, chill, and listen to these great old songs - really the best of what hip hop had to offer me. No to mention, it felt good to lay back and feel like a kid again.
The rest of my visit was just like any other visit home. Lots of great conversations, retelling stories from when we were younger, and lot's of good homemade cooking. Don't get me started on my mom's gravy! Going back reminded me how much my experiences growing up helped shape who I am today, and for better or worse, my music was an integral part of my identity both then and now. I like to think that at least in part, it was for the better.
Music helped give me a sense of identity and belonging. It rang true and expressed a lot of what I saw in the world around me but couldn't really understand or express myself. It provided me with common ground with others, so I didn't have to stand alone. It gave me a sense of pride about who I was and what I could become. Now, of course, not all songs did all that, but some did. Some stuck with me. Some of them changed me for the better. These hip hop originals are more than just great tunes that should be listed somewhere online under classic hip hop downloads, but they had become part of me.
Do you remember that sense of energy and struggle and exuberance that was youth? Do you remember the ups and downs - the crushes and getting crushed? Now, I do.
I can remember it like it was yesterday now, after finding that old shoebox full of mix tapes. I'm glad I went home, and I'm glad I rediscovered some of the feelings, beats, and emotions I felt while growing up, and of course, now I'm craving another helping of my mom's gravy.
