Seabiscuit
Laura Hillenbrand
In 1938, after ten years of turmoil, a small crooked-legged racehorse received more press coverage then Hitler, Mussolini, Roosevelt, or any other news figure. Towards the end of the Depression, Seabiscuit' was an icon, enjoying broad-based adulation throughout America.
To see him race, his fans crowded the roads and poured onto special "Seabiscuit Limited" trains. Wearing Seabiscuit' hats, they packed hotels and restaurants bringing welcome business in bleak times. His appearances smashed attendance records at every major racetrack and seventy-eight thousand people attended his last race, a crowd comparable to the Super Bowls. Radio broadcasts of his races created excitement across the country, drawing forty million listeners and as many as forty thousand fans turned up for his track workouts.
He gazed from massive billboards throughout America and every week he featured in Time' Life' Newsweek' Look' Pic' and New Yorker.' His trainer, Tom Smith, a humble, struggling mustang breaker, his Jockey, Red Pollard, a tragic, failed jockey turned boxer, and his owner, Charles Howard, a bicycle mechanic, before creating an automotive empire, became heroes and their every move was recorded by the glare of the flashbulb.
Seabiscuit was a small, mud-coloured horse with crooked forelegs and because he was misunderstood and mishandled, spent two years floundering in the lowest ranks of racing. In 1936, recognising the talent dormant in Seabiscuit, the unlikely alliance of Pollard, Smith, and Howard was formed and so began the emergence of an iconic racehorse that would propel all of them to stardom.
But it wasn't all milk and honey. In the following five years, the Seabiscuit team and America experienced a roller coaster of unbelievable anguish and exultation. The little horse had to endure bad fortune, conspiracy and injury on the way to becoming one of history's most extraordinary athletes.
He travelled more than fifty thousand exhausting railroad miles, carried punishing weights against the best horses in the country, and shattered more than a dozen track records. His spectacular match with his arch rival, Triple Crown champion War Admiral' is still regarded as the greatest horse race ever run.
In her international best-seller, "Seabiscuit," Laura Hillenbrand has created an inspiring narrative of winning against the odds, a classic tale of three embattled individuals and a horse that overcame the Depression and captivated the world.
Seabiscuit' is now the subject of a major international motion picture. Tobey Maguire, Jeff Bridges and Chris Cooper star in the true story of a long shot that became a legend.
