There are various types of bone cancer. Their classification can be done as follows:
1. Non cancerous or benign
2. Cancerous or malignant
3. Primary bone cancer which will start in the bone
4. Secondary bone cancer which will start in other parts of the body and spread to the bones.
According to various statistics, bone cancers are not life threatening and are very common. Other types of bone cancers are very malignant. Three of the cancers are very common. These include Chondrosarcoma, Ewings Sarcoma and Osteosarcoma.
1. Osteosarcoma
This is a very common type of bone cancer. This is mainly found in the new tissues of growing bones. The age groups of 10 to 25 years are commonly affected by it. It may appear mainly in the upper legs, upper arms and knees. The initial symptoms are often swelling, pain, fracture of affected area, weight loss and feverishness.
2. Ewings Sarcoma
This is a very common type of bone cancer and is mainly found in the nerve tissues of bone marrow. It will develop in the adolescents around the age of 10 and above. Some people may also be affected at the ages of 25. The pelvis, ribs and upper legs are attacked. Symptoms that will appear early in the course could be tenderness and swelling in the affected area. Sometimes, it can also lead to weight loss, anemia and fever. Other less serious conditions may also be included. So, it is your duty to consult a doctor very early. Diagnosis is done by blood tests, physical examination, needle biopsy and scans. There is an extraction of bone marrow near the affected area for microscopic analysis.
3. Chondrosarcoma
This is a type of
Bone cancer in which the cartilage of bone is affected. This is mainly seen in people who fall in the age group of 50 to 60 years. This cancer will develop in the shoulders, upper legs and pelvis. More than 25 percent of primary bone cancers are this type of cancer. Diagnosis is done on the basis of imaging processes such as CT scans. Here the detection of chondroid matrix takes place. The patients in the initial stages are apparently in good health till the pain accompanies the appearance of the lump.
4. Metastatic bone cancer
When the cancer will spread to surrounding tissues, it is known as metastatic bone cancer. It spreads to other body parts such as lungs, prostate or breasts. The cancer cells are similar to the original bone cancer cells.
