Classified Ads
Whilst many people will advocate several forms of online promotion, including back linking on blogs, social bookmarking, blog submission sites, RSS feeds, and article sites such as Ezine, very little is ever mentioned about free classified sites. Whilst Craiglist, the most famous one, has made promotion very difficult, there are literally hundreds more well populated classified sites who will give you pretty much a free reign. I have had particular success with one of my hubpages by posting an occasional classified ad on a very popular UK site, as an example. Not only do these ads bring me some pretty decent traffic, a couple of hundred visitors over a week or two period for each post at times, but some even offer a dofollow backlink.

Read on to find a list of classified sites who could potentially provide a source of great traffic and/or dofollow backlinks. Please use the examples given with moderation, and keep posts relevant and specific, we have nothing to gain through careless and thoughtless spamming and these sites are just a select few out of hundreds out there. These free classfied ads are also great if you actually want to promote a service directly or sell something of course! They are not necessarily just for backlinks or web traffic!
1. Gumtree Classifieds
Gumtree is effectively the UK's version of Craiglist and, like the latter, is split into sub-sites dependent on geographical region. Whilst certain sections only allow paid ads, such as the Jobs section, others are entirely free and largely unmoderated. I have used Gumtree previously to promote certain UK specific hubs, such as my hub Free UK Qualifications Online, which I promoted by posting in the 'courses' section for various different cities. The traffic was moderate, perhaps a couple of hundred views in total for 10 posts, but it was however very targeted and thus the traffic relevant. I'm sure that I don't need to discuss the obvious benefits of relevant traffic. I believe that I am correct in saying that my posts were treated as dofollow backlinks and were indexed in search engines! Although, the posts have a shelf life and are deleted after a while (a few months I believe), I am convinced that Gumtree backlinks significantly helped towards getting one of my hubs to the front page of Google for a particularly lucrative long tail keyword.
2. Classifieds.co.uk
Classifieds.co.uk is another UK site, so only really beneficial for UK specific hubpages, this is another great classified site which is designed in a Craigslist/Gumtree format. I have only tested this with one post, and didn't see a great deal of traffic, but the post was not placed under scrutiny. They will subsequently attempt to sell you premium products, but this is easy to ignore, I can see a great deal of potential with this site if you are very clever with your posts. I think that these are dofollow links too, although I can't be certain as it was so long since I trialed it! Feel free to let me know if you have a go!

3. Craigslist
Does Craigslist require any introduction? By far the biggest classified website in the world, so big and so deep in fact that it will take you a week or so to use the site comfortably! Be careful when being promotional of online stuff, they do not take too kindly to perceived 'spamming', although a well thought out link or two can achieve a fantastic amount of traffic. Affiliate links are a big no-no and could even get your IP banned from posting. The potential here for exposure is phenomenal if you hit it right. I only just realised that Craigslist is international, I always thought that it was exclusively American, so my own use of this site will likely become more frequent. The first link in this paragraph leads directly to the American version of the site, whilst the UK site can be found here. To the right of that page is a list of links to listings for a wide variety of other countries.
4. AdPost.com
Just another of hundreds of decent free advertising sites, AdPost.com gets a decent 30,000,000 page views per month! That is potentially great exposure, I didn't check to see whether or not this site allows DoFollow links, but I can tell you that the site is split into various global geographical regions including United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, and various countries in Asia. I have never used this one, in fact I have only just found it, but I can see the obvious potential in the site. I will update this when I have posted a link sometime, to let you know how I manage traffic wise.
