Classroom Technology For A Digital Generation

With the 21st century starting to settle in it seems that this age is truly going to be the digital era

. With so much in the way of new technology, and an alarming rate of development, it is inevitable that many aspects of our daily lives are destined to change, whether its how we find or do work, or simply how we choose to communicate with one another socially.

In addition to affecting the environment around us it there is also much speculation as to whether or not this influx of new technology is having any kind of effect on our cognitive development. According to an increasing body of research the answer seems to be yes, and its not really too surprising when you consider the amount of time that people are exposed to new technology such smart phones.

In Gary Smalls new book iBrain: Surviving the Technological Alteration of the Modern Mind, it is proposed that this dramatic shift in the way in which we choose to collect and communicate information could just be the beginning of an era of rapid evolution that may well change the human brain as we know it.

Small also makes the comparison between this period of adaptation to early ones, stating that the human brain has not been this rapidly affected since early man began developing tools. And its not just new skills being developed, older ones may become less fundamental too, Gary Small states that; As the brain evolves and shifts towards new technological skills, it drifts away from fundamental social skills.

The human brain is renowned for its plasticity, its ability to change and adapt in response to different stimuli, is what allowed humans to be so successful. This is also the reason why so many people are expected such a drastic effect from the frequent exposure to new technology that comes with the 21st century.

Frequent exposure to certain tasks is what really pushes the brain to develop in a certain way; when a specific task is carried out neurons are fired, the more often this particular task is carried out the more frequently neurons are fired and the stronger the neural pathways become, (practise makes perfect). So the brain will develop differently for different people.

The changes that can be seen in the digital generation already include a greater working memory, an ability for perceptual learning, (adapting to a changing environment), and better motor skills. Multitasking will also be something that younger generations will be better at as they frequently have to juggle various different stimuli when online. With all these changes in cognitive development it makes sense that teaching methods should be developed too, with new classroom technology suited for these new learning styles.
