Clean Those Gutters Now

No time like the present to do a job that you hate

, but one that is absolutely necessary no matter where you live. Clogged gutters (and were talking about house gutters here, not the gutter running down your street) anyway clogged gutters can cause very serious damage to your home. When water pools at any point along your gutter, the clog forces the water to run down through the wood and on into the foundation.

Leaves during fall are some of the main problems, but there are other objects that find their way to the top of your home and into your gutters. You might consider toys, or small balls from the neighbors kids that think you stole their toys. When you clean your gutters regularly that alone will alleviate that problem.

However there are many other things that will cause the clog. One of them is just plain dirt and grime, and you know how the wind can stir up those problems. Every place on earth has strong winds and theyre not only in your area. Those winds can toss leaves and other stuff onto your roof even in the summer months.

So dont just plan to clean the gutters right before winter sets in. Winter sometimes brings ice, and water pooled on your roof will turn to ice. So maybe it doesnt get that cold where you live, youll still have problems.

Another thing to be cautious about is anytime you plan to use a ladder. As you know, ladders and gutters go hand in hand, and youll probably need a ladder to reach the gutters. Caution is the word to follow, and if your ladder needs to lean against the house just be careful that you dont lean the ladder against the gutters. If you do, plan on replacing a section of the gutter, because water wont run through a damaged gutter. A ladder with four legs might be the better choice, and even those ladders can be dangerous.

Anytime you step one foot up a ladder, it can be dangerous. We learn early never to walk under a ladder, because its bad luck. Luck though has nothing to do with ladders, and they are still dangerous. So dont count on luck.
