Cleaning A Vinyl Fence
Cleaning a vinyl fence in most instances will be as easy as hooking up a garden hose with a sprayer and drenching the fence thoroughly
. Over time there may be some stains and soils that will be more difficult to remove. Stains from grass, or rubber tires will take a bit more scrubbing.
When the hose and sprayer doesnt clean the entire area, you may have to apply more pressure and elbow grease. Follow these simple instructions: Pour dish soap into a warm bucket of water, soak an old towel good and rub it across the stain. A non-abrasive pad might make the job easier. Be sure to rinse the soapy residue off of the fence.
If the above method failed to get the required results try adding bleach to the soapy water. You might want to wear rubber gloves to protect your hands and arms because that harsh bleach will no doubt run down your arms.
To clean stains that have either sun baked into the surface of the fence or any other stain like tar, grease or graffiti stronger solutions may be required. Bleach added to the bucket filled with 5 parts water, and 1 part bleach may work. That mixture will be better on dark colored fences. On white fences, you may want to add more bleach like 3 parts water and 1 part bleach.
You may need to use mineral spirits or automotive tar remover to get the heavier stains removed. Start this procedure first by spraying down the entire fence area. Moisten a cloth with either/or, but not necessarily both chemicals. Rub the stained area and be careful of the pressure you use. You will definitely need those rubber gloves.
One of the non-abrasive cleaners you could use to clean your fence is the Magic Eraser put out by Mr. Clean. This cleaner works well on stubborn stains, and just requires a gentle rubbing.
If nothing has worked so far, there is another product that may do the job for you, use Xylene. Moisten your cloth with the liquid and scrub the area vigorously. Remember to spray the chemical off with your garden hose.
Experiment to find the best cleaning method and what works best for your fence by starting at an inconspicuous place, especially if your fence is a dark color. Dont leave the soapy water with bleach on your darker colored fences.
If you dont want to go to all that trouble, check online to find someone who will be happy to clean your fence and it shouldnt need it more than once or twice a year.
