Your furnace filter is the first line of defense against airborne contaminants. Furnace filters are so inexpensive and easy to change that there's little reason not to do it every month, and doing it when you clean the air ducts will help you remember.
Locate the filter on your furnace and note the dimensions listed on the side of the filter. Go to your hardware store and get a replacement of that dimension.
Filters can also be bought at any grocery store or big retail store. Filters will need to be changed every 3 months no matter how expensive and strong the filter is.
Spend a little extra for a style with multiple layers of filters within it, as it will do a better job of clearing the air. You should also clean each vent in your home.
To easily clean the air ducts in your home you will only need a broom, mop, and a vacuum cleaner. They all serve sepcific purposes.
Use a broom to sweep the air vents. You can use a broom or a mop to clean the high ceiling vents.
If you use a broom, then beware of the dust that will fall. Using a damp mop will help prevent some of the dust from falling since it will be wet and grab onto the dust.
Unscrew the cover to the air duct. Lay the grill on an old towel, and sponge it off with any household cleanser and pat it dry with the towel.
You can also vacuum inside the vent area, but don't go up too high in order to prevent losing any part of your vacuum cleaner. Clean the air ventilator cover.
Many times, there's dust all over the vent cover that can be cleaned by washing it. Then dry and screw it back on.
At each ventilator, use a screwdriver to take the grill off the wall or floor, and set it aside. Make sure not to lose the screws.
With the vent cover still off, attach your vacuum hose to the vacuum with a brush attachment at the end. Use duct tape to connect all the parts of the hose and the brush attachment so it doesn't come loose while it's in the ductwork.
Run the vacuum hose around the inside of the ventilator, starting at the part closest to you and working your way back as far as you can reach. Focus on the corners and the ventilator joints, where dust can snag and build.
Follow up by wiping out the inside of the ventilator as far in as you can reach. Put the ventilator cover back on and move to the next duct.
In most homes, air ventilators are on the ceilings while some homes, such as a mobile home or homes on a wooden platform, will have the air ventilators on the floor. Air vents are important to keep clean since it comes in contact with the air you breathe while in the house.
Breathing in dust is not healthy and can get you sick. Keep the air ventilators free from clutter.
Don't pile boxes by an air vent, since the boxes can block the air coming through and make the other air ducts work twice as hard. If the vents are on the floor, do not cover any of them or it will make dust accumulate on the other air vents quicker.
