Clep Provides Adult Learners With Needed College Flexibility
Todays job market is extremely demanding; earning a better salary often requires more time
, more dedication, and more education than ever before. Having a bachelors or masters degree can make a job applicant more appealing, or spell the difference between one salary bracket and the next. However, college is often time consuming and expensive, making a degree difficult to earn around a job and a family. But now there is a way to shorten time in school in a flexible, cost-effective way.
College Boards credit-earning system
CLEP, or the College-Level Examination Program, allows college credit to be earned through achievement tests. A college student who scores well on a CLEP exam can earn anywhere from 3 to 12 credits without ever having to register for a class. Available CLEP test subjects range from business, to composition, to science courses, opening up opportunities for earning credit in practically any area. The tests themselves cost $77 as of July 1, 2010, making them hundreds of dollars cheaper than the tuition to take a class for the same credits.
Over 2,900 colleges accept CLEP credit, and it can add up. Since the rigor of the tests is equal to a college-earned education in a subject, many colleges will accept up to 30 credits based off of
CLEP tests that is a years worth of studying! Earning those credits in a classroom may interfere with job or family time, while studying for a CLEP test can occur anytime, anywhere. Some colleges, especially online and distance education sources, will even accept up to 60 or 90 CLEP exam credits. That means up to three years of college can be covered with less time in a classroom, and more time handling other responsibilities.
CLEP subjects can be studied at any time, at any pace. Many students learn their subjects in a classroom setting, but many others take
CLEP exams based off of independent study, personal interest in a subject, one-on-on classes, or even past job experience. An independent study course allows a student to cover material they enjoy at their own pace, and do so anywhere, from at the office during a lunch break to a child's sports practice. Those who have already covered testing material in a job or job training can now earn credit for their hard work.
CLEP exams are open to anyone, but have been frequently used by adults pursuing college degrees while also balancing jobs, families, and other responsibilities. With over 1,400 testing locations worldwide and testing dates many times per month, taking the test itself is also flexible. CLEP testing offers an alternative way to earn college credits, so that adults students can learn at their own pace around their own schedule. This flexibility helps both shorten time in the classroom as well as bypass lower level classes for a more enriching college experience. The CLEP program is a time-saving way to make college the perfect fit for any student, no matter age, schedule or education level.
