Climbing Eel Crags In The Lake District
I got to the 2,749 feet summit of Eel Crags in due course
, and passed on at once to the 2,649 feet top, which was really the principal object of the day's work, as I had missed it on the previous occasion. There is not a big depression between the two tops, but I must admit that there is rather more than I had realized, and I think perhaps it is right to recognize them as two separate tops. But it is difficult to know just where to draw the line in this sort of thing, and the amount of the intervening dip is not the only thing to be considered.
I should like to see an official list composed of the hills of Lakeland and North Wales over 2,500 feet, showing which are separate mountains, and which are subordinate, but individual tops. The only such list that I have ever seen is not official, and I disagree with it in one or two points. For instance, it always seems to me a needless refinement, to reckon the two bumps of Kirkfell as two separate tops. Of course, nobody would ever agree entirely with any possible list that could be made, but if an official list be made and promulgated, we should be bound to accept it.
No two people ever agreed, or will ever agree, as to the classification of the Coolins. I have never seen a list yet of that unique mountain group, without considering that the man who composed it was a fool, and feeling convinced that he had never been up most of them. It has often occurred to me that if we accept, as we are supposed to do, the theory that Snowdon and all its dependencies Crib Goch, Crib y Ddysgl, Lliwedd, Yr Aran, etc form only one mountain, and if we take that as a standard, then the whole of the western Coolins should also be considered as forming only one mountain; which is absurd.
From Eel Crags I went down to the depression between it and Grassmoor, found the water in the little stream of excellent quality, and made a long halt there. Then on to Coledale Pass, up Sand Hill, and on to Whiteside. The long, rocky, knife edge ridge of the latter mountain is very interesting, and quite the best thing of the day, which was a much shorter one than I had anticipated. There is a very deep valley between Whiteside and Grassmoor, or else I might have finished up with the latter. It was still not quite one o'clock, and there were, unfortunately, no more hills in front of me. I had only to get down to Lanthwaite Green, and then walk about four miles home.
There was still a very high wind blowing, and it was very cold for June. I descended a little way, and then made a halt for a second lunch, and after my meal, lingered for some time, admiring the mighty shoulders of Grassmoor, and the softer delights of what Gilpin calls the inchanting scene of Cromack. He also mentions the mountain of Grasmere as rising above all the other mountains in the neigh bourhood, and remarks that there is a lake of the same name, but no connection. West calls it Grasmire Hill. Gilpin also says that Grassmoor, or rather the mountain of Grasmer, is said to be equal to Skiddaw, and that no mountain in that district aspires to be higher than Skiddaw. None of them appear to have heard of Scawfell Pike, and only Horne mentions Scafell.
