Climbing For A Fun Workout

Out of the many activities available for people who wants to adopt a sport

, rock climbing stands out as a unique and fun experience that also offers an excellent exercise benefit. There are many different skill levels and styles associated with the sport, as well as many places that can be used to pursue it.

It is because of this uniqueness that many people take up the sport in the first place. It is an exhilarating experience that offers a sense of danger and excitement to the proceedings, as well as pitting the person doing the climbing against their own strength and technique as they attempt to go up a rock face.

Rock climbing is largely what its name entails. Athletes use their hands and feet to find holds in the face of the rock, ascending as they go until they reach the top of the face or they reach a certain objective.

To aid the athletes in their pursuits, an assortment of gear is used to supplement the individual's skill level. Most of the time, participants are clipped into a harness that encircles their waist and goes through their legs, while being attached to a rope.

To aid the hands in finding a purchase in a cliff face, chalk is used to enhance grip and remove any slipperiness that sweat might cause while going up. Additionally, the feet are wrapped in tight shoes that bend the toes inward and allow a great deal of weight to be focused on small parts of the toes and foot.

While this gear is not mandatory, it certainly is preferable. It is designed with the safety of the participant in mind, as well as giving them an edge against some of the physical limitations that may be present in their bodies.

Despite its simple premise, the sport is a fairly complicated and involved one, due to the skill sets and techniques that are required. This combines with the physical limitations in every face that must be overcome in order to ascend higher.

A skillful participant in the sport uses their hands to find purchase in the rock while using their feet to push upward. Since these holds may be tiny, strength in the toes and in the fingers are of utmost priority.

In this sport, technique and proper equipment are much more important than brute strength; because the ability to haul one's self up a handhold does not guarantee success or that there will be another opportunity to do so. Agility and flexibility are also prized assets, but a lack of them can be overcome with good technique and the ability to read the course during the ascent to determine the safest and most useful type of route to take.

There are many levels of skill and types of climbing that are present in the sport. Most new people will choose to go with a "top rope belay", meaning that they will climb while secured to an overhead rope that is fed to another person on the ground, essentially allowing a pulley system to be able to catch the athlete if they fall.

Another type of climbing includes the "clip in" system; where the participant is responsible to clip in a line attached to their harness into a series of implanted hooks in the side of the cliff. This system allows a single person to ascend and be responsible for their own safety, and they get much more of a sense of danger and immediacy from the experience as they do so.

Lastly, there is the option for skilled climbers to go up a face without ropes or harness, electing to use their shoes, skills, and chalk to get them up safely and efficiently. This method is known as "bouldering", and represents a higher skill level that puts the skills of the athlete directly against the laws of gravity and the immediacy of their situation.

Rock climbing is an exhilarating sport that offers a sense of romance and danger to an already exciting concept. The freedom and challenge that this offers, coupled with the challenge that it offers the athlete, makes it a great option to pursue for those that want a fun option to a complete workout.
