Clip On Hair Extensions Let You Go Long In Minutes

Hair extensions have been used for decades by movie makers to take an actor's hair from short to long

. However, extensions had to be professionally applied so that the camera would not catch any flaws. As extensions became more popular, many women opted to have them professionally glued into place. This involved a commitment that not all were prepared to make. Today, clip on hair extensions let you change the length of your hair in a matter of minutes, all in the comfort of your own home.

Do it yourself extensions work best if your hair is at least shoulder length and is medium or thick. Shorter hair and fine hair require extra steps that are best left to a skilled stylist. While you can make your own extensions by purchasing the hair and the clips separately, kits that have the hair already attached to the clips are usually easier for beginners to manage.

Extensions are available in synthetic fibers or human hair. Synthetic hair should never be subjected to hot curlers, hair dryers, or curling irons. Human hair extensions, however, can be treated just like you would your natural hair.

Curling extensions before applying them lets you achieve a more natural look when you do them yourself. Straight hair makes it more difficult to blend extensions with your real hair. If you are using human hair, you can curl them with hot curlers. You can also use regular curlers on human hair, and must use them on synthetics. Let extensions dry thoroughly before clipping them into place.

Clips will hold more securely if you tease hair at the scalp before applying. Attach the extensions into the teased hair one at a time. Begin at the nape of the neck and work upward, securing the extensions in rows about one inch above the last. The number of extensions you will need depends on the result desired.

Once all of the extensions are in place, blend them into your natural hair. Use a pick or a wide toothed comb and gently arrange the hair until you cannot differentiate between the extensions and your own hair. Add barrettes or pins as desired.

Remember that it takes practice to achieve a professional look with clip on extensions. If you are planning to wear them for a special occasion, allow yourself plenty of time to learn how to apply them. You might also want to ask a friend to help you, either by applying them or by guiding you.
