What are the best diapers for your baby and your life? It's a big decision. If you use cloth, you're choosing to spend more time involved with your child's waste. This is a definite disadvantage. What are the benefits of cloth diapers?
Cotton diapers are natural and non-irritating,
Wetness can be felt by your baby, making early potty training more likely,
Cloth diapers may be better for the environment, since you're reusing them rather than buying the plastics, and padding, and gels of disposables which then end up in the landfills.
Newer types of cloth diapers exist - all in ones or AIO - include the absorbant material and the cover, in a nice package that can be velcroed or snapped together, working as seamlessly as a disposable diaper.
More economical(?) This is debatable, and probably depends on the type of cloth diapers you buy: are they all-in-ones, useable for a while as your baby grows?
What are the disadvantages?
More work. You need to clean the diapers, which may involve soaking, scraping, dumping, and smells. When on the go, you also need to transport the dirty diapers till you're able to wash them.
Less hygienic(?) If your hot water or washing machine doesn't get very hot, you may not be adequately killing the bacteria in human waste.
Leaks. The old style cloth diapersa rectangle of cloth that pins up, with plastic overpants may leak, which can be inconvenient.There are also midway solutions like a cloth diaper service. We used this with our older daughter for a while. On a regular schedule, we received a delivery of clean cloth diapers and wipes, and turned in our dirty diapers and wipes to be washed, sanitized and dried. It worked pretty well, but the cost was not insignificant ($80/month) and we needed to store the dirty diapers in the meantime and also had an initial investment in the diaper covers.
Upfront expense. You'll need about 80 diapers a week for a newborn, so think about how often you want to wash--and if it's every 2 days, you'll still need 20 diapers to start with. If you're using all-in-ones, the expense is greater.
How do you decide?
Weigh the pros and cons, and see how things fit with your lifestyle. Your solution may be a moving target. You may find as we did that cloth diapers work for you for the first few months, perhaps while you're on maternity/parental leave. After the first few months, we switched to chlorine-free, gel-free disposable diapers, and began infant potty training.
