Clothes Checklist for Moving to a Colder/Warmer Climate
Amongst organising removalists, packing and everything else you have to worry about when moving
, checking the climate is a simple but important task. Not being prepared for your new climate especially if it's colder can lead to ill health almost immediately. Fashion may or may not matter to you, but it certainly doesn't matter to the weather. Get your basics under control before you worry about looking your best. To help figure out what you're going to need, here's a quick rundown of what you'll need in warm and cold climates:
Cold climates: Jumpers and cardigans. Easily found, it's often a good idea to get a few of varying thicknesses and use them as layers. This is especially important if you're in and out of air-conditioned areas often. Jumpers and cardigans come in a multitude of varieties and are in and out of fashion so often it's safe to assume a trendy level of post-irony with whatever style you choose.
o Jeans. One good pair of jeans will see you in good stead for quite a while. It's not uncommon for people to wear one pair of jeans for the entire Winter, only washing and putting them away when it becomes too hot to wear them anymore.
Long socks and legwarmers. They may look silly with shorts but can be safely hidden under a pair of pants or jeans and will easily battle off those Winter chills.
Beanie or hat. Most of your body heat escapes through the top of your head. This spill of vital energy is easily corked with a hat or beanie.
Pyjamas. A little uncool, yes, but you'll be thankful for your humble pyjamas on frosty Winter nights.
Warmer business suits. If you're a tie-and-jacket man from a warmer climate it's likely that your business suit is made of a synthetic material that will do little against a cold wind. A good wool suit is the best option to keep warm at the office (apart from air conditioning).
Warm climates: Shorts. Shorts can be as trusty and as hardy as jeans, but it's not advisable to only have one pair. Simple and necessary, regardless of current fashions.
Singlets. Rarely is it acceptable to wear a singlet out to a social occasion, but there are days when even a t-shirt is too much. Wearing singlets is a little like being naked it's fine as long as everyone else is doing it, otherwise keep it for around the house.
Thongs. A good pair of thongs are a lifesaver sometimes. It's extremely uncomfortable to wear shoes, let alone socks, on days when the heat is warping the horizon. If you're one of those people who are a little ashamed of the site of your feet you know who you are it's high time to get over it. Shoes and socks enclose your feet and don't let the skin breath. Humidity and heat will see your feet literally basting in their own juices. This will cause uncomfortable swelling feet and creates the perfect breeding ground for stubborn fungi to take hold like the nightmarish athlete's foot. It's also a great feeling to know that bare feet is just a couple of ankle flicks away.
Being prepared against the weather is a basic human need, and something to take very seriously, especially if you have small children moving with you. There are a few basics to sort out before any thoughts of looking your best should enter your mind, and if the weather in your new area is considered extreme, it's doubtful anyone will care what anyone else is wearing. If space is not a big issue in your move you may choose to buy your new clothes before moving. If not, suitable clothing should be among the first things on your shopping list when you arrive at your destination.
