What will be best to use with your next project? Will you be best sticking with dedicated servers or jumping onto the cloud bandwagon? Most of it boils down to what the application is and what the usage will be. Not everyone can jump on the cloud wagon. This might be the latest and greatest thing but it might not be right for you. If we take price for example, cloud computing would look a lot more cost effective. The pit fall is that you are comparing silver to silver. This is because you are only paying for the resources needed for the virtualized instance. Where as with dedicated servers you will be charged the same amount regardless of how much you use. Don't go with the hype that you are only paying for what you are using. It does not mean you should run the server for 12 hours a day as it's cheaper, instead it means your new application can expand as you do. For launching your new application just put a few extra nodes online to help handle the extra load and once things fall back again just kill them. Whereas you would need to get your dedicated server host to prep new hardware which could take anything from an hour to a couple of days, plus then the time it takes you to set up the server application. Cloud platforms are typically unmanaged, but some companies will supply a managed service but expect to pay for it. A dedicated server is easily found with an unmanaged or managed option. If you have experience with managing or running a server then an unmanaged method is probably the way to go for you. With regards to cost again, consider if you are just hosting a simple blog, a VPS would suffice. Shared hosting also now uses cloud technology giving you the best of both worlds. Certain providers can charge you by a per hour basis for your cloud service, which makes things look cheaper than it might be. The can make it work out a lot more expensive than it could be. Whereas others will charge you the entire month and so makes the maths a lot easer. Of course with dedicated servers you are only going to get charged by the month. However if your launching the next big app for Facebook or other unpredictable large volume applications and need your content distributed globally, then the cloud is most likely the best place to host it. Cloud software gives you massive scalability and power on demand. You may wish to get a small cloud platform to investigate and test before jumping in. This can let you learn how the cloud platform works and if your application would be suitable to host this way. On the other hand you could start with a cloud environment, and if it is not for you, you could switch to a dedicated server. Time and effort will be your only cost. But provided you do your homework and research both methods and the implications on your situation, you can't go too far wrong.
