Cna Certification Exam - Being Prepared

As an aspiring certified nursing assistant (CNA)

, you must undergo formal training and pass a certification exam before you can be hired by hospitals, nursing homes and other long-term healthcare facilities for obvious reasons. You may consider your CNA certification paper along with its corresponding Skills Completion Card and Written Completion Card as your tickets to a good career with good salary and benefits package in the healthcare industry.

Final Test for Aspiring CNAs

After completion of whatever legitimate CNA training program you were enrolled in, you become an eligible applicant for the certification exam. Known as the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program (NNAAP), applicants who pass it are listed on the Nurse Aide Registry of the state and henceforth become qualified for the positions of certified nursing assistants, nurse aides, or any other similar jobs.

By the way, it is the National Council of State Boards of Nursing responsible for the development of nurse aide evaluation programs in both state and federal levels. Applicants to the certification exam can find practice tests on its website.

Two Parts, One Test

The CNA certification exam has two parts, namely, the skills test and the written test. Both tests must be passed before the applicant can be conferred the certificate, which is issued by the concerned State and released within 16 weeks after completion of the exam. However, successful applicants can show their Skills Completion Card, Written Skills Completion Card and Completion Certificate to their prospective employers pending the release of their certification.

Anyways, the two parts of the certification exam can be briefly described as follows:

The skills test involves demonstration of competency in 5 areas, which are randomly chosen from 25 areas. You should have little problem here considering that you have practicing these skills during your CNA training days. You will be graded on your performance on each skill and you should pass all five areas. Just to mention a few of the 25 areas, you must practice your skills in hand washing, applying one knee-high stocking on a patient, and assisting a patient in bed.

The written test has multiple-choice questions, which will vary in number from one state to the next. The passing percentage rate will also vary between states but suffice it to say that you must pass the exam before you can be considered a true-blue certified nursing assistant.

You also have a choice - either a written exam in Spanish or an oral exam in English, if and when you cannot take the English written exam. You must inform the proctor in advance.

You can take the test 3 times in most states but only when your papers are still valid. You only need to retake the exam where you failed but when you failed both parts three times in a row, you will be required to undergo retraining before you can take the exam for the fourth - and hopefully, the last - time.
