Coal is a nonrenewable natural resource and, as such, every effort should be made to attempt to conserve the resource and minimize the amount of coal that is used. Unfortunately, changing to various types of alternative energy that is better for the environment can be prohibitively expensive, not to mention the fact that many alternative forms of energy, such as solar and wind power, can be unreliable and require certain specific weather conditions. Co-Firing as an Option for Your Business


If your company makes use of coal-fired boilers in your power plant or factory, there is an option available to you that can help you to dramatically increase your energy efficiency and reduce the amount of coal that you burn by as much as 20 percent. Better yet, this option is possible even without changing your existing boilers or infrastructure. This option is called co-firing.

Co firing is a great solution for companies that make use of coal-fired boilers because it can work with your existing boiler system. Essentially, when you make use of co-firing, you use your existing furnace and simply burn two different fuels at the same time. One of those fuels is the coal that you have been using and that provides you with the energy you depend on. The other fuel is called biomass.

Biomass is essentially organic waste products. Biomass is plants, trees and related organisms that engage in the process of photosynthesis. As part of the photosynthesis process, these plant materials end up with vast amounts of stored carbohydrates, which is essentially stored energy. The organic waste products and biomass can be pelletized, chipped or otherwise converted into a convenient form so that it can be burned and this harvested energy can be released.
