Carrying of knives is a common occurrence and has been since the old generations before the so called civilization' era or period came to be. However, today, people must have particular licenses to enable them carry weapons, because knives are now classified as weapons ever since the first day it was established that they are able to cut through flesh. But there are different knives that are used for different purposes. There is the kitchen knife, a steak knife and the smaller pen knives.

The difference between these types of knives varies mostly with their use, size and their price. Camping knives, a classification of pen knives, are small in size and are used to cut or chop small things like twigs, peel fruits and vegetables and the basic use of cutting. This knife does not have serrated edges. It is plain and when sharpened could be very sharp even though it was meant to be a safety knife. It was mainly designed to help people to survive in the wild or places where they are alone and away from civilization.

Another type of pen knife is the one that is given to defense forces. This knife is specifically used for self defense or to cut items that have bound anyone when that person is in distress. When used for any other reason other than its intended purpose, it will be in the violation of the law. Pen knives are nowadays made to fit into a belt buckle to sort of become a camouflage with the belt in that when attacked, the attacker will not realize one has a weapon in his or her belt.
