Coimbra is one of the oldest cities founded in Portugal

, which is why it promises to be an exciting Portuguese tour. In fact, it was the first capital during the 12-13th centuries period, which preconditioned its recognition as one of the most incredible cultural spots since. In fact, Coimbra is divided into two parts, initiated in the Middle Ages. Upper city is surrounded by medieval wall; the entrance is in Almedina Gate. Preserving the oldest buildings in Coimbra, upper city is a set of antique architect styles, most of which are seen on the old university buildings. By the way, Coimbra University is acknowledged as the oldest university in Portugal (founded in 1290), which is seen on the highest point of the upper city. It is designed in Baroque style with an ancient toller, nicknamed as The Goat by students. In previous centuries it announced either lessons beginning or their end. Besides, students were not allowed to leave the upper city during study period. The inner yard of the university is decorated with King John III Statue, who assigned local Royal Palace for universitys needs.

King John V of Portugal, in contrast, founded the Braque Library in the 18th century. It is an obligatory sightseeing stop while exploring Coimbra. External and internal design is truly fascinating. Specifically, the interior of the library outbursts with ornaments and paintings, performed in gold, blue and red colors. It is interesting to learn how library stuff cleans the building. At night workers cover horizontal surfaces with carpets and release trained bats. They hunt pests, which are likely to be the reason of books damage.

Long before the University founding, cultural significance of the city was noted by Santa Cruz Cathedral, built by the order in 1131 of the first Portuguese monarch - Afonso I of Portugal. In fact, it is a shrine of Afonso and his son - Sancho I of Portugal. To date it remains notable Renaissance monument, due to reconstruction of Basilica in the Manueline style in the 16th century. It is referred to as National Portuguese pantheon, being one of the milestones in Portuguese history.
