Coin Collecting Made Cool?

Collecting has really made a move towards the mainstream over the years

. Seems not too long ago that having a collection of any sort, be it old LPs, baseball cards, stamps, or coin sets, was the province of a peculiar brand of nerd whose tendencies were to swim in the nostalgia of their collectibles. These days though the explosion in various specialty markets for vintage things has made all of these collections, if not totally cool, at least look like sound investments and admirable hobbies. On top of that the wide reach of television programming dedicated to antiques auctions, storage space auctions and pawn shops have put an increasingly sharp focus on the value and earning potential of collecting everything from vintage furniture to collectible coins.

I guess what I am trying to say is that coin collecting has taken on a completely new view in the world. People are now dropping big bucks to find the missing pieces in their coin sets, not just for the cash value of the sets but also for the joy of completing a collection. Collecting anything used to be sort of a weird rabbit hole to crawl into, but coin collecting often seemed particularly peculiar among the nostalgic. Some might have argued it was second only to say stamp collecting as being a strange choice. Of course those who took up the hobby before it had some sort of cultural cachet knew in the back of their minds that eventually coins would have a certain amount of historical importance and therefore some implicit value.

Time has obviously bared the coin collectors of the world out nicely and assured everyone that this was in fact a worthwhile pursuit. The resulting boom in coin collecting supplies informed the hobbyists that there was growth in what they were doing. Many collectors have taken this upsurge in interest to sell their coin sets. Getting out during a good period for coin collecting might seem like a wise move or a necessary one to many collectors, but for others the commitment to their interest will likely serve them or their families quite handsomely in the future. As collections get snatched up and not released for sale, over time scarcity will once again drive prices and interest up. We are likely looking at decades of ebb and flow for these sort of collectible coins. The results could make a lot of people some used to call nerds, quite wealthy.
