The cold reading most commonly occurs as a part of a call back audition, when the director has started to look at a more select group of actors. The purpose of the cold reading audition is to gain some perspective into how each actor might fit into the prospective roles. The director will also be looking to see how the actors look, work and interact with each other.
The director gives each actor a script that they often have not seen before. They do not have very much time to rehearse the script. The actors that remember the basic principles of of cold reading with be able to give a better performance during the audition. There is no time to memorize and run lines- it more about each actors instincts and their ability to react and adapt to the moment.
