In military terminology the phrase collateral damage means "unintentional damage or incidental damage affecting facilities, equipment or personnel, occurring as a result of military actions". During the Vietnam War the term "collateral damage" was coined to describe, and some would suggest downplay, the actual effect of a military campaign on the civilian population by US Forces.
Collateral damage is usually viewed as significant but contained, meaning the number of losses or the level of damage is still acceptable when compared to the overall benefits of taking action.
While the phrase collateral damage may have its origins in military terminology, it has also found its way into the popular vernacular. The world of business is especially fond of the concept of collateral damage to describe the unintentional damage left in the wake of a singular action. If a company decides to move its offices out of a city, for example, the subsequent loss suffered by local vendors and restaurants could be described as collateral damage. The sudden closing of a department for financial reasons could also cause collateral damage, as other employees lose their own positions as a result of the shutdown.
Sometimes collateral damage occurs on a social level. A divorce, for example, could be said to leave behind some collateral damage, as friendships and family relations disintegrate. Other events such as an unexpected death in the family or a tragic accident could also cause collateral damage, as others' lives are negatively affected by the sudden change. When a singular event creates a sudden upheaval in a number of lives, the resulting fallout could be accurately described as collateral damage.
In some situations collateral damage is intentionally factored in as to challenge and overcome a problem, to get where you want to go, or achieve what you desire. A move you will have to take at your own expense like the fishermen of Japan did.
We all know that the Japanese love fish. One can imagine how much they would love fresh fish. However, for decades the waters around Japan have not held many fish. So to feed the Japanese population, fishing boats got bigger and went farther into the sea than ever.
The farther the fishermen went with their boats, the longer it took to bring in the fish. When returning with fish took more than a few days, the fish were fresh no more. The Japanese did not like the taste.
Fishing companies got together to solve this problem by installing freezers on their boats. They would catch the fish and put them to a freeze at the sea. This ingenuity allowed the boats to go farther and father for a better catch. The Freezers also allowed the boats to go stay longer.
However the Japanese know their fish and could taste the difference between fresh and frozen and they did not like frozen fish. This affected the prize of the fish and the frozen fish brought a lower price.
It was time for another thought process and this time the fishing companies installed fish tanks. They would catch the fish and stuff them in these huge tanks, fin to fin. In such an unfavorable jam and after a little thrashing around, the fish stopped moving. Though tired and dull, they were nevertheless still alive when arrived at the shores.
The Japanese still knew their fish and unfortunately, they could still taste the difference. Because the fish did not move for days, they lost their freshness and for the Japanese their fresh-fish taste. The taste was sluggish; the Japanese preferred the lively taste of fresh fish.
So once again, it was time for another round of brainstorming. There must be solution to this, but what? So how did the Japanese fishing companies solve this problem? How do they get fresh-tasting fish to Japan?
How Japanese Fish Stay Fresh
To keep the fish tasting fresh, the Japanese fishing companies still put the fish in the water tanks. But now they added a small shark to each tank. The shark eats a few fish (collateral damage), but most of the fish arrive in a very lively state. Here lively literally means ALIVE'. Why? Because the fish are challenged in a hostile game of "I catch you, I eat you "with the shark. In maneuvering and escaping every jaw crunch they have to stay alert and full of life and spirit

This may be familiar with some people, as soon as they reach their goals, such as finding a wonderful mate, starting a successful company, paying off their credit debts or whatever, they might lose their passion. They think they don't need to work as hard or at all, so they relax.
You experience the same problem as lottery winners who waste their money, wealthy heirs who never grow up and bored homemakers who get addicted to prescription drugs. Like the Japanese fish problem, the best solution is simple. It was observed by L. Ron Hubbard, an author and Founder of Scientology in the early 1950's.when he explained," Man thrives, oddly enough, only in the presence of a challenging environment."
The Benefits of a Challenge
The more intelligent, persistent and competent you are, the more you enjoy a good problem. If your challenges are the correct size, and if you are steadily conquering those challenges, you are happy. You think of your challenges and get energized. You are excited to try new solutions. You have fun. You are alive!

Instead of avoiding challenges jump into them. Beat the heck out of them. Enjoy the game. If your challenges are too large or too numerous, do not give up. Failing makes you tired. Instead, reorganize. Find more determination, more knowledge, more help.
If you have met your goals, set some bigger goals. Once you meet your personal or family needs, move onto goals for your group, the society, even mankind. Don't create success and lie in it. You have resources, skills and abilities to make a difference.
