Collecting Wrought Iron Outdoor Furniture

Since the 1930's wrought iron has been one of the most popular forms of outdoor furniture

. But its origins began much earlier in 13th Century England and France. While the styles change, these pieces last and last. There are many companies who offer new or even replica versions, but collecting older pieces to mix in is very popular as well.

The early American pieces of wrought iron were made for those living in colder climates like New England. Because they could take the harsh winter elements, they were popular garden pieces year around. A freshening up of paint in the spring made them new again. They are now common all over the country and are one of the most permanent and lasting styles of outdoor furniture.

Wrought iron is one of the heaviest types of outdoor furniture and it is from that weight that part of its durability comes. Earlier pieces were cast to be very thick while newer woven methods allow a lighter weight. This weight is especially valuable for those who live in areas prone to storms and strong winds.

The variations on traditional styles are enormous in new products, but for many it is fun to collect vintage pieces to add to a collection. Whether it's a tea cart or an interesting plant stand, the older pieces mix right in with newer ones for a great design effect. Even if you aren't an antique collector, finding a cool vintage piece at a tag sale makes a great addition.

Seeking unique pieces like chaise lounges, sofa-sized gliders or tea carts, which may no longer be made, are fantastic finds. They also add an element of surprise and interest in any outdoor furniture setting. The more unique, the higher the price may be, but there are always bargains at tag or estate sales.

For instance, the old French bistro tables can often be found at estate sales or junk shops. They make wonderful pieces for a small balcony or for a place to have morning coffee. Plant stands and wrought iron lamps are also out there for the finding. To integrate them into existing decor is easy. It's just a coat of paint.

In shopping for collectible pieces, bear in mind that many great finds will need little more than a wire brushing and a coat of paint. A table that is missing a glass top can easily be remedied with a call to a glass shop. Chairs can be outfitted with new cushions adding instant comfort and value to them too. A coat of paint will give a fresh new look to the piece.

When adding vintage pieces to a collection, know that there's a vast difference between traditional cast iron and wrought iron. Cast iron comes from moulds and is often much more ornate where wrought iron is hand forged and simpler in design. It's just as durable as cast iron but melds more easily with contemporary outdoor furniture designs.

Collecting older wrought iron is not only fun but items like grills, grates and architectural elements can be incorporated into an outdoor area. Not only are they an element of surprise at times, but also very beautiful as art objects too.
