Every budding artist needs some practice in Coloring Pages when they start

, but not everyone is blessed with a Mum or Dad who has a talent for sketching, or an older sibling who has the skill and the patience to pass it on. Where do you make a start?

Black and white line drawings have always been a popular option, included amongst the 'cheap and cheerful' fillers included in Christmas stockings in the (usually vain) hope that the child will spend a little longer in bed on that special day to give exhausted parents the chance of a few minutes' extra sleep.

Many of these collections of line drawings are either individual objects or traditional scenes, and are not subject to any copyright rules. These also include puzzles of a number of different types, such as a simple "join the dots" pattern which requires the child to follow a set of consecutive numbers to finish the outline of the picture before colouring it in.

Other options include pictures which give the would be artist a colour scheme which they can choose to follow in order to achieve a faithful copy of the original. These tend to appeal more to older children, perhaps those old enough to begin developing their artistic abilities beyond the first, hesitant attempts of the very young.

Parental supervision is not a major factor, but a certain amount of common sense which amounts to a light handed form of censorship involving flicking through a collection before purchase to ensure that there is nothing they personally would consider offensive or inappropriate for their child.

There are also a large number of high quality collections which draw heavily on material inspired by films and other media productions. The majority of these are from recent films, etc and as such are subject to laws regarding copyright, which tends to make them more expensive to produce because the distributors will have been obliged to include something to cover the cost of royalties in their cover price.

These publications are generally very popular because they are based on current characters which children enjoy watching on television and in films, and total sales of such books will usually mean that the extra cost of using copyright material is not a major factor, and can easily be recouped.

There are also a number of more educational collections on the market, aimed at a more serious, dedicated sector of the market, the older and more accomplished artist. Although these have correspondingly lower circulation figures, they tend to be of a higher quality and include notes, suggestions, and exercises designed to encourage and develop the individual artist's skills towards a recognised qualification, such as GCSE examinations and similar awards.

Historically, the Cartoon (both as a single sketch, or as part of a three and four frame strip format) has been used by artists and writers to entertain readers, and frequently to make a barbed comment on society's foibles. Many are a thinly veiled criticism which often have a political angle to them.

Many of these are in fact a partnership between an author and an artist, such as "Sketches by Boz" written by Charles Dickens and illustrated by his friend George Cruikshank. More recently, Cartoonists such as Reg Smythe gave us both text and pictures for Andy Capp. Jim Davis, who gave us the Garfield cartoons, is on record as stating that he hates ALL cats.
