Collector cars of the future

Some people collect vintage milk bottles, for others it's rare vinyl imports

, fine wines, DVD box-sets and even Post Office paraphernalia but, for some lucky people with a little bit of money to invest, car collecting can be a rewarding and lucrative hobby. From celebrity car enthusiasts like radio presenter Chris Evans, right down to grease-monkeys who love nothing more than rebuilding classic models, car collecting is actually on the increase. But putting the past to one side, just what cars could be serious collectables in the future?

Without even realising it, many people could be happily driving a car which, in a future collectables market, could be worth several times its current retail price; and why that is comes down to many factors. First there has to be a buzz' around the car, for instance, James Bond driving the Aston Martin DB5 made it more sought after, and then it has to be lucky enough to have design features which age well. Looking at what's on today's road though, here's the low-down on potential collectables of the future.

It is currently considered to be one of the best handling cars on the planet and, because of that, the Lotus Exige S has taken off hugely. Thankfully relatively low production numbers and a zeitgeist design means that, one day, the Exige may be worth serious money. Similarly priced but in an entirely different class is the Audi S5. A slick, solid coupe, the S5 marked a peak in the German manufacturer's production career and, as such, is likely to be remembered as one of the great cars of its time.

An odd choice but one with method in its madness is the Smart car could well be the next big thing in collecting cars. With the ethos of form is function, the ruthlessly efficient and radically practical Smart car still turns heads today. and with collectors always looking for good examples of an era's design, there's no reason why it won't stand the test of time. In particular, limited editions of the Smart Fortwo - released to celebrate a decade of the firm's life in Britain - could well become highly sought after, even in the not too distant future.

Limited edition versions of cars are always highly sought after, even when they are only slightly tweaked versions of popular models. For instance, Vauxhall's Black and White Corsa or the Ford Focus RS500 have proved highly popular amongst collectors. Limited edition models are especially popular because, due to the relatively small numbers they are produced in, they become instant collector's items. Over time, when less and less of them remain in circulation, they usually become even more sought after and, therefore, worth even more money.

If you own, or plan on buying, a car which could become collectable in the future, make sure that you keep it in prime condition. The likes of windscreen repair cost very little, and can go a long way towards keeping your car as collectable and sought after as possible.
