YOUNG Australian soldiers are fighting and dying in Afghanistan for a caretaker government in Australia and a corrupt one there

One hesitates to mention the name of the last poor but proud wretch who gave up his life since the federal election, but the Royal Australia Regiment 6th Battalion lost a very brave soldier and we lost a father, husband and citizen. Life is cruel but no life is crueller than that of those who are left behind. Why are we fighting? On whose behalf? Who are we fighting?When the lance corporal's casket came home last week, it was greeted by the caretaker Prime Minister, Julia Gillard, and prime minister not-long-in-waiting Tony Abbott. The tragedy of this war came home during the week when US President Barack Obama announced Operation Iraqi Freedom was over and handed responsibility for security back to the people from whom we took it. Iraqis will no longer suffer from a false sense of insecurity. It was a melancholy reminder of president Richard Nixon's announcement on January 23, 1973, that Henry Kissinger and special adviser Le Duc Tho had just initialled an agreement ending war and restoring peace in Vietnam. Within two years Saigon fell to the relentless peacemakers from Hanoi. Nixon had called it peace with honour. Thereafter the war would continue by proxy.Lyndon Johnson had officially died the day before but in reality he began to die when he realised as president that the war was unwinnable and unrewarding but there was little he could do about it. There does seem to be a bit of deja vu.In Sydney, it was fashion festival time, with long lean lanky models with shoelace-thin bikinis walking the runways in celebration of skin. In Afghanistan, female skin is traditionally seen only through the mailbox shutters of a burqa or by a husband.At the same time Minister for Education Verity Firth writes of "the deep sense of injustice" suffered by same-sex adoptive parents over regular married couples. A conscience vote did change the law and allow both lesbian parents to "sign notes for school". She writes: "Discrimination on the basis of sexuality is completely unsupported by any evidence, and more importantly is unjust." Homosexuality does not exist in Afghanistan except among lusting warlords towards girly boys and invading Westerners towards each other. Many in Afghanistan are fighting for the right of women not to be naked but forever hidden.As the US and its allies leave Iraq, we move, through our leaders, to build our forces in Afghanistan. Obama said from the Oval Office when announcing the end of combat in Iraq: ''I have ordered the deployment of additional troops who under the command of General David Petraeus are fighting to break the Taliban's momentum. As with the surge in Iraq, these forces will be in place for a limited time to provide space for the Afghans to build their capacity and secure their own future.''Oh my God, its deja vu all over again. If the neighbouring Russians couldn't secure the space for the Afghans, these space invaders from America and Australia are just as unlikely. No one doubts the courage and commitment of our soldiers but the wisdom of our decision makers has been tested and exposed. The release of George Bush's memoir Decision Points in November will answer many questions about his presidency. One can only hope he reads it and learns.ugg
