Combine Harvester Acquires Living Quarters On The Wheat Harvest
Last time I wrote I talked about how I decided to follow the wheat harvest
. Today I want to tell you how we lined up living quarters and how we got our first job.
We looked at different options for housing while on the wheat harvest. We needed room but wanted something easy to move down the road.
I bought a 35' motor home. I also bought a small camper that I remodeled with a bedroom in the front and place to put tools in the back. I wanted the truck driver to have a place of his own and the small camper would work for that, and we would have our own privacy in the motor home. It would move down the road easily with enough room for all. This is the worse decision I made with the custom harvesting operation.
Thinking of camp grounds like at a KOA where there are restrooms and showers this idea would have worked better. On the wheat run that is not how it is. The parks have electricity, sewer, and water hookups and that is it. There are not any restrooms or Laundromats. We had to share the one bathroom in the motor home. Then I needed to buy two spots for hookups, and that makes it more expense. I should have bought one large camper and a bigger truck or pickup to pull it. Then when the camper was unhooked I could have used the truck for service or transportation. Mistake I made I wish I could do over.
I tried to sell the motor home, but when the economy declined like it did it really took the resale out of motor homes. So we still are using it as we did the first year, just made some improvements. We got a bigger second camper, put a washer and dryer in it and another bathroom. This help out a lot on our second year. Still need to rent two spots, but we make it work.
