Coming When Called

To get anything to come when they are called is nearly impossible

. Ever try to get your spouse to snap to attention? Forget it. And kids; its easier to get a 3-ton bolder to move an inch than it is to get the yard rats to stop what they are doing and move even a foot in your direction.

So, to get your mutt to drop the bone and sashay over to your side isnt easy unless you have a Porterhouse in your pocket. Thats going to cost you in the long run. Bribes always do.

But the most important thing you should train your pet to obey is to come on command. Especially if your intentions are for your little buddy to get out-of-the-way of a runaway train.

The pup supposedly learned the cue. It didnt take. Start again from scratch. You need to pick a whole new word. Instead of come try here.

Never utter this cue unless you mean it. First use it when you know that your canine will immediately amble toward you. Make sure there are no distractions like other dogs or something that has a funky smell loved by dogs.

You are trying to reinforce this behavior. When the dog correctly responds, reward them; if not by a meaty treat at least a good dog and a friendly scratch on their back.

Repetition is vital; however here are a couple of other practices you can add to the training:

Dont be stingy with the rewards. It could be their favorite toy, something to eat or a game of fetch. Just dont wave the reward around until the mutt does what they are told.

Change things-up. Be unpredictable with the rewards. Dont give the wise old wolf the opportunity to think to itself, Great, another slice of fake bacon. When the dog can forecast the treat, they have the option to refuse it because its been turned into a known bribe.

Dont simply be oral with your command. You might want to slap your hip then hold out your hand. Remember, canines like to sniff things.

Everybody screws things up occasionally. Dont hold it against your pet. And dont let it get you down. Be persistent, kind and firm. Make it enjoyable.

The message that youre trying to get across to your pup is:

Stop what you are doing and come to me.

When you come to me, its a positive thing.

That youre replacing the fun that your dog is doing by negative-reinforcement. Would you come to anyone if when you arrived they put you in your human-sized crate?

Once they come, hand out a reward and let them go back to what they are doing. Its sort of like when you go fishing but throw-back that wide-mouthed bass once youve snapped a mental or physical picture. Think catch and release.

An important thing about rewards: Dont turn them into bribes. If your dog thinks that when they schlep over toward you theyll get a reward, the day will arrive when they will only come if you hand out the treats. This isnt Halloween, its dog training 101.
