Common Caravanning Terms And What They Mean
If you are new to the caravanning scene or have not had much to do with it before
, you may have started to hear a lot of terms and phrases being thrown around, but do you have any idea what they actually mean? Use this handy caravan terminology list as a reference and never be confused again!
A Frame - this is the triangular frame located at the front of the caravan. It houses the handbrake and the electrical cables for your van and is often covered by plastic.
Awning - this is similar in appearance to a tent, except that it only has three sides. It attaches to the awning rail, which is usually located on the side of your caravan (over the door).
Berth - this refers to the number of people that the caravan will sleep; essentially the number of beds that it has.
Breakaway Cable - this is the steel cable that is permanently fixed to the handbrake lever. It has a clip on the other end that is attached to your tow bar during towing. If, for example, your caravan were to come unattached from the car, this cable would apply the brakes.
Coupling Head - also known as the hitch, this is the part of the caravan that joins to the tow ball on your car and locks the van into place.
Hitch Lock - this is the metal lock that fits over the caravan coupling head, and it helps to prevent the van from being stolen.
Hook-Up Lead - this is the cable that connects your van to the electricity supply, either at your room or a caravan park.
Jockey Wheel- this is the small metal wheel that is located at the front of the A frame, which can be used for moving the caravan around when it is not attached to your car.
Outfit - this is what your car and caravan are called when attached.
Steadies - also known as corner steadies, these are the legs that are located at the corners of the caravan. They can be wound down and are used to ensure the stability of the van whilst it is in use.
Whilst these are by no means the only caravan terms and phrases in use, they are the most common. If you hear a word or phrase that you do not understand, it never hurts to ask what it means. Caravan owners are usually more than happy to help a fellow travelling enthusiast out.
