Common Irritants That Make Dry Skin Worse

People who suffer from dry skin spend a great deal of time applying moisturizers and creams in an effort to get some relief. Dry skin often becomes flaky and sensitive, causing the afflicted person to scratch, which of-course, makes it even worse.

However, there are a few common irritants that are easily avoided which will help offer some relief to your skin problems and reduce the chances of becoming overly itchy.

Drinking lots of water is good for you. The body is made up of almost 70% water which needs to be replenished often. Treating your skin with water is a different story.

The body produces natural oils to moisturize and hydrate your skin. Water washes away these natural oils, effectively drying out the skin. The hotter the water, the more profound the effect. Therefore, avoid long soaks in the hot tub, bath tub or extra long showers. If possible, bathe and shower in warm water, and keep it as short a session as possible.

Pat your skin gently with a towel to dry off. Excessive rubbing with a towel is unnecessary, and also damaging, since it removes the outermost protective layer of the skin.

Heaters, furnaces and air conditioners all pull moisture out of the air. If the air is dry, it's only natural that your skin will be dry also. One of the easiest ways to remedy dry skin is by adding a humidifier to your home. You can install them directly onto your furnace, or get portable models for use around your home. A small humidifier to moisturize the air in your bedroom overnight will do wonders for your thirsty skin, and probably help you sleep better too.

If you find your skin is starting to flake or even crack and bleed, you should implement these simple ideas right away. You'll be amazed at how little it takes to get dry skin under control, once you avoid the major irritants. If you find you're still scratching too much, be sure to keep your nails trimmed nice and short to keep the damage to a minimum.
