Common Pests That Invade Our Homes

There is nothing worse than discovering an infestation of insects and pests in your home

. Spring and autumn are especially bad times for pest home invasion. In order to prevent this, it is best to hire a professional pest control expert to come and take precautionary measures. But if it's too late to prevent, pest control exterminators can take care of the existing problem as well. Knowing what to look for is key. Below are listed a few of the most common house invading pests and rodents.

Ants

There are several kinds of ants that can invade our home. Carpenter ants are especially damaging. As their name would suggest, carpenter ants love wood. They tunnel into wood in order to build colonies. This can cause serious damage to structural parts of the home if an infestation is left unchecked. Carpenter ants feed on plant materials, insects, and sometimes the food around your home. They are some of the largest ants around measuring a quarter to a half inch and are usually black in color. Odorous house ants are another serious problem. They get their name because of the rotten coconut odor they give off when crushed. This type of ant can often be found invading and nesting in homes, creating huge colonies.

Spiders

Spiders, especially venomous spiders can pose serious risks to homeowners. Though the type of spider invading your home depends mostly on where you are located, some of the most common in the United States are the hobo spider, the black widow, and the brown recluse. Hobo spiders are identified by the their brown color and chevron pattern on the abdomen. They are most common during late summer, early fall. Bites from hobo spiders are venomous and damaging to flesh. The black widow female is shiny black color. Its most identifiable mark is a bright red hourglass on the underside of the abdomen. Black widows are venomous and can cause serious pain and cramping. Brown recluse spiders are tan to dark brown with a violin shaped marking behind its three pairs of eyes. These spiders aren't aggressive but will bite if startled.

Rodents

The most common house-invading rodent in the United States is aptly named common house mouse. These mice prefer living close to humans and will infest homes, chewing and shredding furniture and contaminating food. Deer mice are also a problem, especially in rural areas. Though they are more comfortable living in fields and prairies, they will invade homes. Knowing if you have a deer mice infestation is important because these rodents are carriers of the hanta virus, a deadly disease spread to humans through their droppings.
