Common Web Hosting Myths: Part Two
In the previous part we looked at a number of myths surrounding web hosting and whether or not they were actually true
. Part one looked at the level of knowledge you need to host a website, what you are able to host and reasonable levels of uptime. When it comes to web hosting, knowing the difference between fact and fiction can save you a great deal of frustration. It can also mean that you are better equipped to find the best plan for your websites needs. This part will look at what you need to do and what your hosting provider should be doing. It will also look at the concept of unlimited hosting plans and whether they are a good choice.
Your host is responsible for backing-up data...
Most people are well versed in the need to back up their music downloads or their important documents; however what may not be quite so obvious is the need to back up your website. If the server that is hosting your website crashes it is possible that you could lose the website that you spent so long building and customising. However, it is not solely your hosting providers job to back up every website that they host. They may have some form of a backup of your site but it should be the customers job to make sure everything is backed up as it should be. It is never a bad idea to keep a backup copy of your website on your own computer and on an external device. Some hosting providers will make it easy for you to back up your site with content management systems that have one click back up options or features that will take you through the backup process.
Your host is responsible for your websites security...
It is not solely the hosting providers responsibility to ensure your websites security; it should be a team effort. A good hosting provider will make sure their network and their servers are free of security vulnerabilities and will make sure that their operating systems are up to date with the latest patches. However, all of this will do no good if you do not follow good security practices. Weak passwords can bring down even the best protected websites. You should also be wary of adding any plugins from unknown publishers to your websites as they could easily be a security threat. In addition you should follow good security practices whenever you upload anything to the hosting server as this could affect more than just your website.
Your unlimited plan is completely, totally unlimited...
There is huge competition between hosting providers and many will make almost-too-good-to-believe offers to try to stand out from the crowd. Many hosting providers will offer unlimited plans that feature unlimited storage space or unlimited bandwidth. Unfortunately this is not usually achievable and there are often caps or usage limits somewhere in the terms of service. Many customers can be taken in by promises of unlimited hosting and then be confused when their hosting provider tells them they have been using the service excessively or they have gone over limits they didnt know they had. Do your research and find out what are realistic amounts of bandwidth and storage and take any promises of unlimited services with a grain of salt.
You should always host your website with your registration company...
If you are starting up a website you will need to get the domain name registered and you can do this through a domain name registration company. Many of these companies will often offer hosting plans as well as some people may find it easier to have their domain name registration and hosting needs together in one place. However, this is not a necessity and you do not have to host your website with the company that has registered your domain. Not all domain registration companies are good hosting providers. Always do research to make sure you are getting the best deal with the best company.
If you have a managed hosting plan you cannot do anything yourself...
Managed hosting plans can be very useful. They can save time and money in the long run and can be helpful for customers who have little experience of hosting. They can also be useful for customers who want the benefits of a dedicated hosting plan but do not have the resource or skill sets to manage and maintain their own server. You may feel slightly apprehensive about starting a managed plan as you may think that you will not be able to do anything yourself. This, however, is not the case. Many hosting providers will provide different levels of managed hosting plans with different pricing tiers. You can decide how hands on you want your hosting plan to be, whether you want everything to be taken care of by the hosting company or whether you want responsibility over certain areas.
