Common Wintertime Garage Door Problems
Garage doors are effected by cold winter temperatures
. Many homeowners don't give it a thought until they expect the garage door to open or close, and it doesn't.
According to homeowners, the most common problem is that garage doors do not open to the top or close to the garage floor during wintertime.
There may be an easy solution to the wintertime garage door problem. Here are a few remedies to choose from.
Simple Solutions
Check the garage floor where the garage door closes down. Ice may have built up. Remove the ice. Deicers work well for this task.
If the floor isn't the cause, check the garage door hinges, joints, springs, rollers, tracks and brackets. The garage door may loosen up when an appropriate lubricant is applied. The brackets keep the runners in place. They are made of metal and cold temperatures effect metal. Metal contracts. The brackets may be misaligned. If they are, adjust them.
Not so Simple Solutions
If these remedies don't work, then the solution may not be so easy. The problem may be electrical. Examine the electrical fittings. Electrical wires or sensors may be damaged. Cracks in them can be caused by cold temperatures. Electrical problems are best handled by a professional. Skill, knowledge and proper tools are required.
Door Weight
A similar wintertime problem is the garage door opening and closing too slowly. It may not begin to move until pressing the button for several minutes. Inspect the force settings. If the house is constructed of wood, keep in mind wood expands and contracts with temperature. The weight of the garage door may increase. This forces the electric garage door motor to work harder.
Doesn't Quite Make It
The garage door may lower then go back up. The force settings need adjusting at the beginning of every season. Take a look at the instruction booklet for guidance.
Horrid Noise
Another prevalent complaint reported by homeowners is the horrible noise garage doors make during the wintertime. The garage door sounds terrible when it opens and closes. Lubricants can handle temperatures below freezing. Apply an appropriate lubricant to every metal part you can find. Make sure to lubricate the joints and hinges.
If the garage door still sounds awful when being opened or closed, it's probably the runners. The contracting metal throws the runners out of alignment. They may be off only a little. Still, the garage door may continue to sound horrible until the effects of warmer spring temperatures allow them to expand once again.
Weather Stripping
One more common wintertime garage door problem occurs when cold temperatures cause the weather stripping to dry and crack. Keep weather stripping lubricated. If the garage door has panels, check them too.
