The Commonwealth Games are organized by the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF), a union of around 70 countries lying in the major continents: Asia, Africa, America, Europe, Caribbean and Oceania. The CGF was formed in the year 1930 by Bobby Robbinson with a firm will of promoting and celebrating an atmosphere of unique, friendly, world class Games in these member countries and also strengthening the harmonious mutual relations between the Commonwealth countries. So this time it is much bigger, energetic and thrilling. This multi sport event held every 4 years involves the elite athletes of the Commonwealth of Nations. The first one of these was held in 1930, under the name British Empire Games. Later it was changed to British Empire and Commonwealth Games in 1954; and to British Commonwealth Games in 1978. Australia, Canada, England, New Zealand, Scotland and Wales are the only six teams that have attended every Commonwealth Game. Delhi defeated the Canadian city of Hamilton by 26 votes in November 2003 at the CGF General Assembly and won the right to host the Commonwealth Games 2010. Standing on the western end of the Gangetic Plain and bordered by the states of Uttar Pradesh and Haryana Delhi will be hosting these Games from October 3 to 14, 2010. The Commonwealth Games Village is being constructed on a 40 acre site in the heart of the capital with a possible capacity for 8,500 athletes and officials. Moreover, the city is undergoing a complete makeover for the ease of tourists and athletes. Improvements are made in the fields like stadiums, transportation, security, electricity, accommodation (hotels) etc. Existing and new stadium will be used to house the following sports: Aquatics, Athletics, Badminton, Bowls, Boxing, Cycling, EAD Events, Gymnastics, Hockey, Netball, Rugby 7s, Shooting, Squash, Table Tennis and Weightlifting.About the Author:
