Communicate With Your Dentist At Your Next Appointment

Oral health is an essential element of your overall health but it is often overlooked

. Many people put going to the dentist for regular check ups and cleanings at the bottom of their list of priorities. You might even be one of them!

Regular visits to the dentist are important to keep your teeth and gums healthy and intact. It has been estimated that 75 percent of the American population has one form of gum disease or another. Not only is this bad news for your mouth, but gum disease has also been linked to other major health complications. The reality is that the condition of your oral health has an impact on the health of your entire body.

You need to be honest with your dentist about the state of your health. He or she does not need to know every little detail but should know the general picture of how healthy you are. It is important that you tell him or her what is going on and that you ask about certain things that can improve and enhance the treatments given to you.

Whether it is a health condition you have been diagnosed with, a new prescription medication you are taking, or a surgical procedure you have had, your dental provider needs to know about it. Changes in your mouth matter, of course, but so do other aspects of your health.

What should you be asking your dentist when you go for a visit?

Ask what can be done to prevent dental problems from occurring in the future. Also ask what you can do (if anything). He or she will probably tell you that you can help by coming to the office whenever anything changes (such as discomfort in an area of your mouth).

Ask your dental practitioner how what you eat and drink affects the health of your teeth and gums. Find out what foods are good for your dental health. If you experience staining of the teeth, drinking tea, coffee, soda pop, or red wine may be to blame. Some foods and beverages are more staining to the teeth than others!

What should you tell your dentist?

Tell him or her if you suffer from any underlying ailments or sicknesses. Find out if they could affect your mouth in any adverse way. For instance, if you have a breathing problem the dental provider will need to take certain precautions when working on your teeth.

Say something if you snore or if you experience problems sleeping at night. Those who suffer from sleep apnea should also inform their dental care providers.

If you have bad breath don't keep this to yourself. It can be a sign of decay in a tooth, or of the build up of bacteria. Communication between doctor and patient is a important part of staying healthy.
