, communication is vital to people's lives. The process of personal development often includes developing one's communication skills, for success in relationships relies heavily on effective communication.

One of the best ways to improve your oral communication skills is by actually talking to different kinds of people, but at times when this is not possible, there are several activities which you can engage in so as to improve your communication skills.

Here are some practical ways by which you can improve your communication skills, and in turn, achieve personal development:

1. Reading. Reading is a very good habit, but keep in mind that what you read influences your perspectives. From novels and self-help books to comic books, or news, feature stories and blogs on the internet, topics in reading could be serious or light, but it is nonetheless a pleasurable activity which could enhance and expand your level of understanding. It will also further develop your vocabulary.

2. Listening to speeches, interviews and discussions. Taking some time to listen and analyze speeches of great leaders will enable you to examine well-organized thoughts and the elaborate use of language. Notice that good public speakers are able to influence and persuade their audience, while good interviewers are able to elicit essential information from their interviewees.

3. Trying to act or play different roles. Notice that actors and actresses are very good communicators. It is useful to see yourself as some kind of actor or actress sometimes and see how effective you are at conveying messages through nonverbal actions, particularly by using eye contact, facial expressions, hand gestures and body movements. Learning how to express yourself is indeed a significant aspect of personal development.
