The advent of portable devices for all types of applications right from a phone to a TV telecast system has helped us do everything at a faster pace. Typically, we see a large cell tower construction for an antenna that transmits the radio waves for all wireless communication. We have seen large dish receivers on rooftops and the ground alike, which are used for TV signal communication.

With events being held at various venues and a large amount of coverage being required, it is not always possible to have a live telecast of such events without powerful equipment like antenna.

Cell on Wheels - Transmit Live from Remote or Crowded Locations

Take for example a football match being played at one of the stadiums in the country. It is not possible to have a large antenna tower installed at every stadium to be used by TV channels to provide a live telecast of the game. Another example could be natural calamity like a tornado or volcano eruption and it becomes necessary to establish a communications network to coordinate help and rescue for the affected location.

Communication links as well as telecast in both these cases is done using mobile antennas. The telecasters use portable, yet powerful antennas to transmit images or videos from these places. These portable antennas are called Cell on Wheels or COW. A COW is a cell of antenna mounted on a portable platform. You don't need any permanent cell tower construction for them.

Cell on Wheels Explained

A cell on wheels is typically made of the following:

antenna

transmission and receiving equipment

power supply in the form of a generator or batteries

platform for all the above

A cell on wheels unit essentially replicates the function of regular antenna towers with the only difference being that it is easily transportable and can be placed at any location that is convenient for the operations. This type of a mobile unit is only a temporary solution for a temporary situation. This is not an alternate solution for cell tower construction.

The unit is generally covered in a box or container to protect it from the weather, Electro Magnetic Interference from other networks or high voltage electricity lines.

These units usually have generators powered by diesel engines or depending upon the power requirements, a set of batteries to keep them operational.

Cells on wheels is a very useful equipment when you want to setup a communication network or a telephone network temporarily in locations that do not have any access to the regular lines of communication either due to the remoteness of the location or because it was not necessary for the place.

A cell on wheels unit can be mounted on various types of vehicles based on the size of the unit and the place that it has to be taken to. It can be mounted on a simple pickup truck or on a large truck with flamboyantly painted colors to match the occasion. It may also be sometimes, included, as part of a vehicle like a bus to conceal most of the equipment except for the antenna or dish that has to be exposed for transmission.

We have seen that communication is a very important part of everyone's life. Be it personal or commercial use, effective communication is what makes the world go around. Wireless communication has taken the way we live and do business to new heights.
