Communication Strategies for the Plan for a Mosque near Ground Zero

Ever since the Sept 11 attack, the relationship between Muslim and Americans has been doomed. Despite the previous suspicions and tension between Muslim and Americans, the Sept 11 attack was the crackdown of any possibility for dialogue. Following this situation, the attempts by US government to establish an Islamic cultural center and mosque in New York City at the hallowed ground has been faced by much controversy. The families of the more than 3.000 people who lost their lives and the US community have expressed negative opinions towards the project. Many of the US citizens have the opinion that, constructing a mosque and Islamic cultural center will enhance US vulnerability to terrorism as well as giving the Muslim higher freedom of enhancing their doomed religion and ideology (Sanchez, 2010). The whole issue has been faced by much controversy thus leading to stagnating of the project. It should be noted that, more than &100; million has already been set for the project as well as the architectural design for the project. The strong debate between the proponents and opponents of the project has led to the current deadlocks to the project. The proponents of the project say it will be a bridge between Islam and a city recovering of the deadly wounds of terrorist attack. On the other side, many people refer the project as offensive and a bridge of the US sovereignty and the wishes of the people. Additionally, many people are very optimistic about the project; whereby they see it as a beginning for establishing improved relationships with Muslim world. Most of the families who their members died in the attack have the opinion that the mosque can built but not so close to the ground considered as sacred (Sanchez, 2010). Another major controversy has been established regarding the more than 1,000 bodies which are claimed to be missing. Worse still, there has been an overwhelming opposition to the project; where by it is perceived to be a slap in the face of the families. Muslim has been referred as a religion of hate and thus need to be pushed out of the US. Despite that, there might be good members of the Muslim community; their absence in bringing enlightenment to their fellow Muslims justifies the need to crackdown Muslim in the US. Since the Sept 11 attack, American Muslim has been the target of terror suspects. The controversy over the establishment depicts the strong tension between the Muslim community and the Americans (Sanchez, 2010). With regard to the establishment of the mosque and Islamic cultural center, there have been various attempts though in vain. Different United States personalities and human rights groups have been in the forefront in advocating for swift establishment of the project. Their main concern was that the project will enhance the already doomed relationship with Muslim brothers thus help in enhancing peace. The efforts of these groups have however met big barriers thus jeopardizing any possibility of realizing the plans. In order to come up with a proper communication strategy, there is great need to conduct a comprehensive and intensive research study into the matter. This will involve the adoption of interviews, questionnaires, observations among other procedures so as to be able to get clear understanding of the opinions of different people. By so doing, proper communication strategies will be arrived at thus enhancing the progress of the project (Sanchez, 2010). Based on the sensitivity of the issue, the research will be professionally executed so as to ensure the best information is arrived at. Based on this aspect, different experts in the field of sociology, anthropology as well as theology will be incorporated in the research strategy. By adherence to these initiatives, the bottom of the matter will be arrived at; thus giving a chance for swift and efficient action. The understanding of the people regarding the adoption of the project will be adequately understood through the research study. By so doing, the research team will be able to postulate proper communication strategies to help manipulate the perceptions of people. The research study will also be aimed at enlightening the people on the benefits of project to the wellbeing of all groups (Sanchez, 2010). Part 2

Various attempts have previously been done in the endeavors to resolve the issue. Nevertheless, all the attempts have ended up in vain since no tangible results have been realized. With regard to this phenomenon, the strategies, approach, communication style, phase of negotiation as well as the communication strategy has been blamed for their failure. Despite the interest of many groups and institutions to ensure establishment of the project, many people have not yet been fully convinced about the legality and utility of the project; thus leading to opposition. The recent attempts by the Christian center and the Islamic group in the United States have all failed (Sanchez, 2010). The attempt by the Christian center has been ineffective based on the poor communication strategies, approach, and the phase of negotiation adopted in the process. To begin with, the approach adopted by the Christian center in regard to establishing the Islamic center has not been effective. Firstly, the extent of consultation and negotiation with the various stakeholders was not optimum thus leaving a lot of suspicion and unanswered questions regarding the matter. It's very sad to see that the Christian proponents for the project did very little in considering the perceptions and opinions of the US citizens. Additionally, there was a big failure in ensuring that all citizens are enlightened about the benefits of the project. With this situation, the attempts received a lot of opposition; thus failure to the whole process. A key proponent for the project was Bill Kelly who tirelessly advocated for the immediate establishment of the mosque (Sanchez, 2010).
