Compact Sports Tourer From Mercedes

In 2005 Mercedes unveiled the B Class which is a small family car or multipurpose vehicle

, in essence it is a slightly larger A Class, it uses the same chassis as the A Class and like the A Class it too is front wheel drive the only two front wheel drive models in Mercedes history. Mercedes refer to the B Class as a Compact Sports Tourer, similar to how it refers to the R Class as the Grand Sports Tourer.

Mercedes may call it a Sports Tourer but that is definitely not the case in the engine department, the Mercedes-Benz B Class in Portsmouth does not come with meaty engines, not even grunting diesel ones. The entry level B160 comes with a 1.5 litre petrol engine that produces 94bhp, the B180 comes with a slightly better 1.7 litre petrol engine producing 114bhp. The 2.0 litre diesel engine is available with either 108bhp or 138bhp.

They have been reports from owners that the B Class is very unsettled on roads, which is made worse by the optional sports suspension set up. Around down the issue is more obvious than on motorways at cruising speeds. Mercedes lack of experience in front wheel drive power trains may be a reason why the B Class lacks so much front end grip, it seems to lose front end grip a lot quicker than many of its rivals.

Where the B Class triumphs and shows its Mercedes pedigree is in its level of refinement, even with so many windows around the car there is barely any noise in the cabin. At high speeds, on the motorway there is a very slight hiss of road and wind noise but other than that the car is super quiet, giving a real luxury feel.
