Today, the VoIP provider is only requesting for call termination on conventional telecom networks and not paying any fees for it

. One solution is that VoIP providers set up their own IP-based networks to terminate calls.

In a nutshell, VOIP is a set of applications that let you to make telephone calls over the Internet. VoIP was originally developed to provide voice communication between computer users in different locations. Someone on a computer equipped with a microphone and headset can talk to another computer user likewise equipped.

In a VOIP call, your voice is first converted into digital data. This is done by 'sampling' your voice -- dividing the analog sound signal into discrete steps that can be assigned a number value.

In order for a Wi-Fi VOIP phone call to work, you have to be in range of a Wi-Fi network or hotspot. What Wi-Fi does for cell phones is that it means you can use the Internet to make and receive calls instead of the cellular network and take advantage of low cost VOIP services.

IP telephony solutions offer long distance calling at a fraction of the cost of a traditional phone network. The Internet Protocol was initially designed for sending data on a real time basis from one computer to another.

Hardware-based VoIP systems use a converter to connect your phone directly to the broadband connection. There is no need to switch on the computer to use this system.

The term high speed VoIP is also not applicable to calls made between two Internet phones. In this case, all data is transmitted over the Internet, very much like an e-mail. Now VoIP technology is used to make calls from one Internet phone to another or from Internet phone to a conventional phone. In the first instance, the voice data travels on the Internet backbone bypassing the conventional phone lines altogether.

The phone number does not change even when the subscriber switches from a conventional phone company to a VoIP phone company. This also applies to inter-city numbers.

A VoIP phone service is available at a fraction of the cost of traditional phone services. VoIP also reduces the long-term costs of ownership.

This Internet phone service allows you to make free phone calls from one computer to another. This service requires two computers loaded with the right software, connected to the Internet which limits whom you can call. This type of free Internet service allows you to make calls from your phone to any other phone. To get this service, you have to log on to websites, and sign up for partner services which may push advertising to your mail.
