Comparing Iron Fence And Chain Link Fences

Two of the most common materials used in fencing are iron and chain link

, each of which has specific advantages and drawbacks. Both of them are solid choices for a number of applications, although each is better used for certain things than the other. Iron fences are typically made of upright bars that are attached through a cross beam, whereas chain link fencing is made of interlocking diamonds of steel wire or cable. Iron fences are very strong and very durable. A well made iron fence is virtually impossible to break through, bend apart, or otherwise bypass. They can be worked into shapes that make them harder to climb and get through, such as those that curve inwards at the top.

Chain link fences are also very sturdy, and while they resist general force such as heavy objects and pushing and pulling, they are weak against specific force, such as wire cutters and blowtorches. This makes iron a better choice for heavy duty security, although both can provide plenty of security, especially when augmented with barbed wire, razor ribbon, or electrical current.

Iron fencing is very difficult to damage, and is resistant to weathering. However, if it is damaged, it is difficult to repair and expensive to replace. Chain link, on the other hand, is easier to damage with the right tools, but also easy and cheap to replace. Chain link and iron can both be damaged by corrosion over time, but both can be protected with anti-rusting agents. Iron can also be painted to provide additional protection.

Iron fencing is used in residential areas more often than chain link, because it is more physically attractive and can be crafted into elegant shapes in order to create a strong yet elegant appearance. Chain link is more or less set in its appearance, making it less than ideal for creating a decorative barrier.

Small iron fences are sometimes used around gardens and backyards to prevent pets and wild animals from getting past them, though chain link can be used to create simple enclosures as well. The bottom line is that chain link is more versatile than iron, but is also less suitable for residential areas. Chain link is cheaper, but also easier to damage than iron fencing.
