With the release of LED TVs into the market there has been lots of debate on the differences between them and LCD TVs. Discussions ranging from performance, energy consumption, features and price. The first thing about LED and LCD TVs are that they are technically in the same family as they both have a liquid crystal display (LCD), the difference however lies in the back lighting method. Conventional LCDs use fluorescent lighting tubes, whereas LEDs use light emitting diodes, thus the name LED.

1. Which television provides the best colours? The edge would have to go to LED TVs that have RGB coloured lights as they provide more of an effect on the backlight colour which in turn provides a crisper and cleaner colour.

2. Which television has a better viewing angle? While LCD TVs have come a long way and newer models have great viewing angles, images still start to degrade with angles of 30 degrees or more. LED TVs on the other hand have viewing angles similar to that of the crystal clear plasmas.

3. Which television consumes the least amount of energy? There are 2 types of LED TVs, edge lit and local dimming.the edge lit TVs use the least amount of energy, followed by LCD and then local dimming LED.

4. Which has better value for money? As LCD TVs have been around longer, there is an abundance of them being manufactured and available on the market at very competitive prices. LED TVs on the other hand are considered to be new technology and generally command a slightly higher price than its LCD counterpart. Although, savings on energy consumption in addition to its higher performance make pricing and value fairly equal.

5. Which television has a longer lifespan? LCD manufacturers typically say that their televisions have a life expectancy of around 100,000 hours. However lots of reports have stated that LCD TVs start to have degradation in colour at around 20,000 hours. Upon extensive research we were unable to locate any specific information on LED lifespan. Although, LED TVs should have at least the same life expectancy as LCD TVs as light emitting diodes don't degrade as rapidly as fluorescent tubing over time.
