Comparing The Magic Of Gastric Bypass Surgery And Cosmetic Liposuction
Wouldn't it be nice if magic was real? You could just wave a magic wand
, say some choice words, and have a perfect body! Despite how silly that may sound, a lot of people expect cosmetic surgeries to work just like magic. They imagine that liposuction can make their bodies perfectly thin and fit. In reality, exercise and lifestyle are important factors too.
But what do lifestyle factors have to do with liposuction? Some people mistakenly believe that having this fat-removal surgery excuses them from having to worry about lifestyle. This is an unfortunate misconception.
Liposuction has an interesting reputation. Many people talk about it, consider having it done, but most know very little about it. Perhaps the lack of basic knowledge on the subject has led to some unrealistic expectations.
A lot of people think that liposuction is a weight loss tool, and this is not true. There is a difference between a medical weight loss surgery (such as gastric bypass surgery) and liposuction.
Gastric bypass surgery is performed for urgent medical reasons. It causes people to lose weight by limiting the amount of food that can be eaten and digested. In most cases, this is done on people who are significantly overweight and are suffering from weight-associated diseases or health problems.
Liposuction, on the other hand, is done almost exclusively for cosmetic reasons. Only a few pounds can be removed from one or two isolated areas of the body at one time. Although there is some debate within the plastic surgery community, the safe limit seems to be about eight pounds of fat.
The amount is so small, comparatively, that there is very little health benefit involved. That means that people have the fat removed simply to improve the appearance of their bodies.
But removing a few pounds of fat can improve a person's appearance more than you might expect. Strategically removing fat from a certain problem area can make a person look more fit and thin.
The catch is that a person who wants to have liposuction done must already be within a healthy weight range. Years of experience (for surgeons) has proven that healthy people are better candidates for the surgery and usually have more pleasing results than those who are less healthy.
The point is that those who get liposuction don't need to lose weight, and those who do need to lose weight are not qualified for liposuction anyway.
Those who have liposuction done must have an active and healthy lifestyle that involves regular exercise and eating well. It is important that lifestyle be maintained long after surgery as well if a person wants to keep their body fit. People can still gain weight after having liposuction, and sometimes the results are not very attractive. To keep looking good for a long time, lifestyle is everything.
