Comparison Between Disk-based Systems And Backup Tape Storage Formats

Deployment of backup storage system is essential for the companies to compete efficiently and successfully in their respective business industry

. Disk and backup tape are the major data storage technologies. Tape storage technologies have proven to be more economical, reliable and sturdy.

In this article, I have discussed the superiority of tape storage formats in comparison to the disk based backup systems. The backup tape formats have the advanced features and higher storage capacities to handle the demanding challenges of todays data rich applications. Acquisition and maintenance costs of backup tape technologies are substantially lower than the disk storage systems. Operational expenses of backup tape technologies are almost 7 times lesser.

In the past, the data throughput rate of disk based systems were faster than the tape formats, but now the transfer speeds of tape technologies have been significantly enhanced. The LTO-5 ultrium tape devices feature remarkable 140 Mbps transfer rate that is much faster as compared to the RAID-5 and RAID-6 SATA disk technologies. Data throughput rate offered by these disk systems is merely 50% of the LTO tape formats transfer speeds.

Industrys top formats of backup tapes are AIT (advanced intelligent tape), DDS tape, DLT tape, Travan tape, Super DLT tape, VXA tape and LTO (linear tape open).

Traditionally, the backup data tapes have always offered more storage capacities than hard disks. This gap was reversed when the storage capacity of SATA hard disks was enhanced to 2 TB, but thanks to the 1.5TB storage capacity of LTO-5 tape cartridges, this gap has again shifted in favor of the tape storage technology. Data compression is another highly advantageous feature of tape technology that increases the storage capacity and data throughput rate up to 3 times. This clearly proves that tape formats are superior in transfer speed and capacity than hard disks.

Now lets look at the data security and data availability in disk and tape systems.

The companies simply cant afford to lose their mission critical data. Varying levels of data security are provided by RAID disk storage systems. RAID-5 disk system is more economical but does not assure reliable data protection. RAID 10 disk technology provides robust data protection and superior performance but is not economical. Tape storage technologies offer reliable and efficient data security features that provide protection over longer timer periods. WORM and data encryption are the two most powerful and intelligent data protection technologies that not only assure compliance with toughest data retention laws, but are also very cost effective.

Unintentional drops & rough handling can damage your storage media. Disk based systems are more sensitive and slight mishandling can severely damage the hard disks, thus resulting in partial or complete data loss. While the data tapes have a sturdy and tough cartridge shell, therefore providing you long term data storage.
