Operating systems manage computer hardware, and consist of a set of programs. Operating systems such as Android or Mac OS X have different features, and determine which applications you can run on your device. OS X

As of the time of publication, OS X is the latest major iteration of the Apple's Mac operating system. It incorporates many popular features, such as the Dock, a pane that allows you to quickly launch applications, and Finder, a file browser.

Android

Android is an operating system for mobile devices developed by Google. First released in 2008, Android has been frequently updated since then. As of the time of publication, the latest Android release is version 4.0, also known as Ice Cream Sandwich. Notable features of the Android operating system include voice control, a customizable home screen and native support for touchscreen devices.

Differences

The most important difference between Android and Mac OS X operating systems is the type of devices or machines they can run on. While Android can run on devices produced by a wide variety of manufacturers, Mac OS X only runs on computers produced by Apple. Another major difference lies in the operating systems' source model. Because Android is an open-source operating system, each manufacturer typically modifies it by adding applications or tweaking the default interface. Mac OS X, however, uses a proprietary license, and only Apple has access to its source code and can modify it.

Supported Devices

While Android can run on mobile devices such as tablet computers and smartphones, Mac OS X is only installed on Apple desktop or laptop computers such as the iBook, MacBook Air or iMac. However, Apple's tablet computer, the iPad, does not run Mac OS X; instead, it runs Apple's mobile operating system, iOS.
